The royal tombs at Saint-Denis had been despoiled following outbreak of the French Revolution and their contents stolen, dispersed, or buried in a common pit outside the abbey. Following the Restoration of the Bourbons the royal sarcophagi were returned to the abbey church of Saint-Denis from a museum where they had been kept. As it was impossible to determine which bones buried in a common pit by the revolutionaries belonged to which king or queen, it was decided that all royal bones should be laid to rest in the Ossarium, a kind of common mausoleum for all kings and queens (only King Louis VII, Queen Louise of Lorraine, King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVIII have tombs containing their own mortal remains). In this way most sarcophagi at Saint-Denis stand empty.

Married in 1570 in Paris Archduchess ELIZABETH of Austria (*1554 Vienna,+1592 Vienna).
He was crowned in 1561 at Notre Dame in Reims. His consort Elizabeth of Austria was crowned in 1571 in the Basilica of Saint-Denis.
Died in 1574 in Vincennes.
Buried firstly in the Church of Our Saviour at Blois. Later reburied in the Basilica of Saint-Denis near Paris (no tomb has been preserved).
His Queen Elizabeth of Austria was buried in St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.

1574-1589: HENRY III (Henri III; King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania)
Born in 1551 at Fontainebleau.

Married in 1575 in Reims Countess LOUISE de Lorraine-Vaudémont (*1553 Nomeny,+1601 Moulins).
He was crowned in 1575 at Notre Dame in Reims.
Died in 1589 in Saint-Cloud near Paris (stabbed).
Buried firstly in Compiègne. In 1610 his remains were translated to the Basilica of Saint-Denis near Paris (no tomb has been preserved).
His Queen Louise was buried firstly in the Capuchin Convent in Paris. In 1817 her remains were translated to the Basilica of Saint-Denis near Paris.

Buried firstly in St Mary's Church at Chislehurst. In 1887 reburied in the Abbey Church of St Michael at Farnborough, England, where his consort Empress Eugenia was later buried as well.
